Career Connect Southwest
From the Governance Board
The Governance Board welcomed Kristyn Fix representing the Gorge Tech Alliance to the group! The GTA is a major supporter of STEM literacy for all students, and we’re thrilled to have this partnership on board!
Gorge Tech Alliance
The Legislative Session is in full swing with a number of policy implications for STEM and Career Connected Learning. We’re tracking many bills in partnership with Washington STEM including HB1146, 1316, 1273, 1374 and 1013. If you want to stay up to date, you can join the Washington STEM Advocacy Coalition for weekly email updates and zoom calls.

Want to get involved with one of our Advisory Committees? Reach out to Vickei Hrdina to learn more about getting involved in our cradle-to-career initiatives.

GOAL 1

Postsecondary Enrollment and Completion

We are excited to welcome the Machinists Institute and Pacific Education Institute to our Network as new Program Builders. These partners will be developing pathways and work based learning opportunities for students in the aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, machinist and environmental education in the coming months!

The Network is supporting the development of a SW WA Rural CTE Cooperative, building structures to offer CTE courses in rural schools through blended learning classrooms. There are ways for small, medium and large districts to be a part of this innovative approach to rural CTE. Reach out to Melanie Walker if you’d like to learn more!
Washington’s FAFSA completion rate is low, and there is a lot of poor information and misconceptions on why a family needs to apply to Financial Aid. Can we help you plan and facilitate your Financial Aid event? We have presentations in English and Spanish and staff to help you reach your students and parents where they are!

GOAL 2

Increased Participation in Career Connected Learning

In January, our Board approved funding to support 13 new program partners in designing and implementing Career Explore and Prep programs in our Network. This $105,000 investment will reach over 3,500 students by June! Stay tuned for highlights from our partners and events that you can share with students!

Manufacturing Worksite Tours

Educators also need to learn and experience the high-wage, sustainable jobs in our region! Join us on a tour of local manufacturers in March, April and May. Register here and contact Chad Mullen for more information!

Career Exploration in Middle School

What does high-quality Career Exploration look like in middle school? How do I start a program or support teachers in connecting to authentic problem solving? Join Melanie Walker on February 7th to Explore CTE in Middle School and Beyond.

GOAL 3

Rigorous STEM Experiences & Community Partnerships

Elementary Science Needs a Comeback!

Students' understanding of science and STEM Concepts builds with every grade level, and a quality K-5 learning experience is key to setting students on a successful STEM pathway. Join LASER (Leadership Assistance for STEM Education Reform) on February 15 to learn how districts in Washington can increase time on K-5 STEM. Contact Vickei.hrdina@esd112.org to learn more.
nPower Girls

nPower Girls is growing!

Since the start of the school year, four new after school programs have started up in Battle Ground, Hockinson, Glenwood and now Ridgefield! We have more room for Teacher and Parent facilitators to start your own club and connect girls in grades 4-6 with women in STEM this year! Contact Sharon Purdue for more information.

GVC Launches 2023 National Civics Bee!

We are proud to partner with the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce as they launch the 2023 National Civics Bee, an initiative aimed at encouraging more young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities. Organized in partnership with The Civic Trust of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, and supported by Career Connect Southwest – ESD 112, this competition will inspire middle school age youth in the SW Washington region to become better informed about local, federal and state governments, a knowledge-set that can give employees a leg up in the job market.
